Year Two: Cotton

We celebrated our 2nd Anniversary yesterday, which is known traditionally as the "cotton year" to symbolize a couple's life being intertwined and woven together. Early on I wanted to get my husband a cotton bathrobe, something fancy but practical. I quickly scrapped that idea when I realized that he would never wear the thing, so I had to rethink a little bit. When thinking about these gifts I've realized I can think of the coolest gift in my mind, but if it's not practical or he would never use it, it's not a good idea. I went a little smaller scale and decided on hand towels, which we needed new ones anyways. I happened to get the one remaining "w" monogrammed towel in Kohl's, and then found some Irish hand towels on clearance (it was right after St. Patrick's Day) and one of them had a corgi on it, which I knew he would love. I also got him a cat puppet, which actually was to replace one that had been damaged due to it being left on the floor. I felt bad though, as that puppet was the first one he bought for me and it had also been the one that he always took to the hospital with him.

He followed the "cotton theme" without even realizing it for one of his gifts. He got a custom throw with our names on it, which I'm afraid to use cause I don't want to get it dirty. He also got us matching key chains that form a heart when put together. Plus, they double as bottle openers, so it was meaningful and practical.

It had been a rough couple days prior, as I have (and still) been recovering from pneumonia, so we went to nice quiet restaurant called Downtowner Woodfire Grill. It was amazing! The kind of restaurant where the staff wear different colored shirts depending on their role. I had the most amazing grilled salmon and garlic mashed potatoes while my husband said his fettuccine alfredo with chicken was seasoned perfectly. At the end of the dinner we asked for dessert menus, but as we were looking the waiter brought over a raspberry blondie a la mode with a candle burning in the center. He explained that it was a dessert for us to celebrate our anniversary, which we didn't expect at all. We both still really wanted to try the apple and pear crisp a la mode, so he said it takes ten to fifteen minutes to make anyways, since they bake each one to order. It was so good. My husband is still talking about it. I'm putting pinterest to work to find a copycat recipe.

All in all, a perfect way to spend our anniversary, bellies full of good food and feeling happy just to be spending a quiet evening together. Once we got home we settled in on the couch and watched a movie to relax. Looking forward to the next year, which will be leather, which I think will be pretty easy to find something.
