Year One: Paper

One year ago we celebrated our first anniversary. I'm getting a slow jump on this blog, but better late than never, and it's only one year old this way.

I follow the traditional gifts for anniversary years, so last year was the paper year, meant to signify a clean slate, a new beginning, and the ability to write our own story. I also liked that it is one of the cheaper years to buy for. We are still paying for parts of the wedding two years later. This was a hard one to buy for, mainly because I couldn't think of anything at first, and thought about scrapping this idea altogether or going for the modern ideas, which seem a little more pricey. I thought about it differently after awhile, and what other materials were considered "paper" such as cardboard.

With this idea I came up with the idea that we both really enjoy playing cards, and UNO is his favorite game, so I got him Dos, which at the time had just come out. We ended up playing many rounds on our anniversary vacation up North. I also got him a copy of the Kuma Satra, as I figured it would be the only book he would ever look at. He doesn't read really at all, but has said that he found this piece of literature very interesting. He wasn't able to get a gift this year, as he had been in the hospital for the better part of a week leading up to our vacation, but I said that was ok, being his wife for one year was a gift itself.

Our first anniversary was a little stressful, as he had just recovered from a stress induced hospital stay and had a terrible infection in his arm from the IV, but we were determined to go on this vacation that we so desperately needed. When we got there, we had to check ourselves in, the staff didn't want to wait for us after we had spent an extra couple hours in urgent care making sure he didn't have a life threatening infection in his arm. We did get upgraded, however, from a simple studio cabin to a two bedroom cabin with two full bathrooms and full kitchen. In other words, a home away from home. We were able to make a lot of our own meals and saved a ton on food with the fridge and freezer to store foods in bulk for the four days we were on this trip. The following day our pet sitter called and said he couldn't get in, because I had accidentally locked the bottom knob (for which there is no key) when I was home alone while my husband was in the hospital. We had to pay a locksmith about a hundred dollars to unlock it, but figured the cost was made up in our upgrade.

It was otherwise a very nice vacation to celebrate our first year of being married, and my husband got to hear his first loon. Tonight we are playing it a little more low-key, no vacations or fancy cabin suites, but I'm just looking forward to celebrating with my husband.
